Braunston

We parked at the old canal buildings and walked round the corner to the Gongoozler's Café boat for coffee in the garden of the old Stop House where tolls were paid. There used to be a rope across the canal that rang a bell when a boat hit it thus alerting the toll keeper.
We wandered along Eastwards to Braunston Turn where the Grand Union and Oxford canals meet. We were surprised at just how busy the canal was, a constant stream of different barges passing or moored. At the junction there are elegant cast iron bridges and a brick turnover bridge, where the horses could change sides without needing to be unharnessed. We decided to retrace our steps rather crossing over and lunched back at the boat café then proceeded Westwards past the marina and former carrier's wharf buildings and boat repair shops, as far as the locks that lead towards the Braunston tunnel.
Crossing over by The Admiral Nelson pub, we followed the minor road and made our way up hill to the Main Street. A street of great variety including the exposed cruck frame of a demolished building and many delightful little details. Reaching the impressive All Saints church we were surprised to find that a peregrine falcon was perched on one of the crockets of the spire, a lovely last hurrah before our descent to our starting point.
A thoroughly enjoyable outing with lots of varied subject matter.
