Elgood’s Brewery in Wisbech is a family-run business which has won numerous real ale awards, especially for its Cambridge Bitter and Black Dog brews.
We were given a tour of the brewery before lunch and this involved climbing steep stairs up to the top of the mash tun where the brewing process starts, chewing various grain preparations, squeezing into unlikely positions to get the best angle for photographs and meeting the brewery cat. During lunch, we checked in some of our tokens which were included in our admission price for samples of beer.
After lunch we toured a beautiful four-acre garden with a maze and small lake in it. Some painters from Skylark Studios in Tydd Gote, Lincs had set up their easels and were busy at work as the rain held off. Many of the dozen who went from the club enjoyed the ‘outing with a difference'.
