Northampton Museum and Art Gallery in Guildhall Road hosts the largest collection of shoes in Europe. It also houses fine and decorative art and local heritage displays. A substantial refurbishment took place recently as part of a promotion to establish a distinct Northampton Cultural Quarter.
The entrance is free and we helped ourselves to a coffee on arrival. We had to each sign a disclaimer that we would not use any photographs for commercial gain. Then we spent an hour on 3 separate floors, the largest of which is the ground floor where the extensive shoe collection is based. If a little dark on this floor, there is plenty to take in, and all the items are naturally in glass cabinets. There was more natural light on the upper 2 floors.
After a spot of lunch, some of took shots in Abington Street of the sculptures on view. Overall, it was an interesting day and we were blessed with warm sunshine, which in itself was ironic as I normally plan for indifferent weather for our first 2 outings of the year.
